WAKING UP THE COMMUNITY GARDEN
One sunny Saturday morning in late March, a group of volunteers set out to revive the community garden in Klecany. The site is located on the grounds of a former military barracks. Amid the drab military buildings, one would hardly expect to find such a green oasis of peace and joy…Accompanied by the honking of two geese, Pepík and Pepík, we set to work. A pile of soil needs to be moved into the rutted tracks, the grass around the trees needs to be weeded, and flowers need to be planted. We plant a plum tree, turn the compost, rake up old leaves, twigs, and fallen apples, clean the herb beds, tidy up the shed, and finally attach a new roller blind to the dish rack. Properly stretched and hungry, we then sit down to a delicious lunch, rest for a moment, and continue working.
We end the day by roasting sausages and sitting by the fire.
Organizer Janča and Zdeňka, a representative of the nonprofit, thank the volunteers
for their excellent work.
Founded in 2007, Pravý Hradec takes its name from important archaeological findings confirming the existence of a Slavic settlement on the right bank of the Vltava River in Klecany. The organization’s mission is to create opportunities for people of all ages to connect and strengthen the local community.
Their Klíček center offers diverse programs, from art and education to sports activities, welcoming both children and adults. They also organize camps, excursions, anniversary celebrations, and neighborhood gatherings to foster social bonds.
A key focus of Pravý Hradec is supporting seniors, for whom they have established a community garden at the local care home. This space is open to young families as well, promoting intergenerational interactions and shared moments in nature.
